Whether it's your first Yarn Discovery Tour or your 15th, each year gives you fun opportunities to plan a great trip - whether you're shopping in-person or from your couch! Where to begin? Here are some fun ideas we've heard over the years:
Leave the Thinking to Us:
Lots of YDT travelers plan for holiday gifts. That's where your free patterns from shops are a huge help. Most of the shops choose their free patterns as great gifts for yourself or others!
It's kind of nice just choosing your yarn color and away you go
to the next shop. Shop in-store or virtually!
Whatever Catches Your Eye:
Most everyone likes to soak up what every shop has to offer. Shops on the tour are unique, interesting and have something new and different to catch your eye. Just go with that! It makes for a fun and memorable YDT experience!
Choose Your Project:
Lots of YDT travellers have very specific projects in mind. If that's you, bring your pattern(s) or a list of what you need. Yarn shop staff can assist you in finding just what you want - whether you're in the shop or calling on the phone! Some shops are offering different project kits online.
Choose Your Yarn:
Other travelers look for specific yarns. We've heard of folks purchasing the same fiber and weight yarn to make blankets or other projects. So they're building the project one skein at a time from different shops. Makes a fun map of memories!
Choose Your Color:
Similar to choosing a yarn, some YDT partcipants will purchase the same color yarn in the weight they want. We know of one shopper who bought blue worsted weight yarn everywhere she shopped and knitted a very awesome sweater for herself.
Choose Your Tool:
There are a mighty handful of YDT participants who seek the golden fleece and visit every shop. We know of several shoppers who use the YDT to fill out their needle and/or hook collections and buzz in quickly to get what's on their list and move on to the next shop!
The Gastronomical Tour:
The YDT is not without its other perks! There are fun restaurants, bakeries, diners and bars in every town along the tour. Non-fibering friends, relatives and spouses can be persuaded to join you if there are good eats along the way. Check with each shop on their capacity guidelines. Some shops may ask your non-fibering family and friends to wait outside the shop or in your car while you shop. It's not what we would like, but sadly, it's what this year is. An ice cream cone or great bakery can help out!
The Couch Crawl:
Not able to get to all the shops? No worries! You still can from your comfy couch! Every shop is ready to make your shopping fun either online or over the phone. Some shops will have kits and yarn available for purchase on their websites. Some shops will be happy to help you with a phone call. All the same benefits! All the same great YDT awesomeness. Just check a shop's website or give them a call during their regular business hours. Did we just say you can wear slippers? Yes! We did!
Not a great tour guide? We know of at least one shopper who takes her passport to AAA for them to plan her trip every year and create a map. Genius! Whatever you decide to do, shopping in-store or virtually, we know you will have a fun time! We're looking forward to seeing you!
